- Much of the information available to Westerners on the internet is either traditional media, or China as seen through expat's eyes. While this is valuable, sometimes the viewpoints of the average Chinese is not communicated to the world at large. We in the West tend to listen to either government mouthpieces, activists, or the educated elite, while the voices of the every day Chinese--those making a living selling pirated DVDs, working in shoe factories, building the Golmud-Lhasa railroad, etc.--are lost in the shuffle. My hope is that this blog, in a small way, will reveal the average Chinese to the English speaking world.
I decided to create this blog after an attempt in 2006 to research the repatriation of oil wells in Shaanxi province and related lawsuits. As I researched this topic, I discovered that most reliable information was circling on the Chinese internet in chat rooms and blogs, and that this information was primarily in Chinese. Because machine translation is so unreliable, I decided I would try to translate as much of this material (Chinese non-traditional media such as blogs and chatrooms) as possible. I certainly don't claim to be a perfect translator, and I may mix in other topics that come up, but I expect to generally focus on this goal.
Any advice is welcomed!
